Military officials confirmed on Sunday that the body of Army SSgt Keith "Matt" Maupin had been positively identified, four years after the 24-year-old was captured while serving in Iraq.
As a 20-year-old reservist in 2004 Maupin had been traveling near the Baghdad International Airport when his convoy came under fire from insurgents. Maupin, along with Sgt. Elmer Krause, were captured and held hostage. Two-weeks after their capture the body of Krause was found but the fate of Maupin had remained a mystery.
Last week the remains of a body were found and after DNA testing they were positively identified as those of Matt Maupin.
On behalf of Clermont County Veterans Service Commission we offer our deepest sympathies for the Maupin family. We salute Matt for his dedicated service and making the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free.
